Description
Sarsaparilla is a plant. The root is used to make medicine. The climbing, woody vine grows deep in the canopy of the rainforest. It’s native to South America, Jamaica, the Caribbean, Mexico, Honduras, and the West Indies. Sarsaparilla is used for treating psoriasis and other skin diseases, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and kidney disease; for increasing urination to reduce fluid retention; and for increased sweating. Extracts of the roots may be effective in treating gout and metabolic syndrome (a combination of conditions, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol).
Sarsaparilla Root can be used in tea, an herbal tincture, and as a decoction, which is a liquid made from boiling the herb
Women who are pregnant, want to become pregnant, or who are breast-feeding should consult with a doctor before consuming. Also children under 18 and people with a history of allergies to plants. There are no known side effects of using sarsaparilla. However, taking a large amount of saponins may cause stomach irritation.
